We all know about Greta Thunberg, and with the Glasgow Cop26 conference due to start next week, it seems appropriate to mention a student-led, global initiative at Le Régent – one which aims to produce sustainably-minded, environmentally conscious people. Since 2020, Le Régent has engaged its students in action-based learning to increase the sustainability of our school in six key areas: Biodiversity, Food, Citizenship, Waste, Water and Energy and now we plan to become an “Eco-School”.
The process is both challenging and rewarding. A committee of students and teachers first decides on the theme of Biodiversity (the variety of living things) as one of the most effective ways to increase the resilience of ecosystems.
The second step, “Diagnosis”, consists of collecting data. We conducted biodiversity surveys of the surrounding forests, streams and school grounds, helping us understand how much change there is in a year, and educate the public on local biodiversity.
Students have also created a survey to determine what people know -, and they would appreciate your input: Biodiversity survey. Next is an exciting phase where we look at ways to increase both people’s knowledge of biodiversity and the actual biodiversity around the school.
If any parents would like to be involved or have any useful contacts, don’t hesitate to contact Ben Wood at ben.wood@regentschool.ch.
